Merry Christmas 2011

This Christmas has been nothing but wonderful.  There are many reasons. I hope I will always remember these for future Christmases.
  1. Preparation. I thought I was going to be at a week-long training mid-December in Detroit for work, so I hurried around Thanksgiving to get everything decorated and gifts purchased in advance so I wouldn't have a stressful last-minute Christmas.  I ended up getting alternate training arrangements and didn't have to go.  The whole month of December I just got to enjoy Christmas instead of prepare for it.
  2. Claire's Christmas Fun List. Mentioned in my previous post.
  3. Christmas music.  Church choir songs.  Singing with the Young Women for our Church party. Singing with Blake and the McGhees in a quartet for a special musical number at Church.  Claire sang with the Church Primary for the party and Sundays.  Calling grandparents via Skype to have Claire sing for them.  Christmas Eve carol singing during my Mom's traditional family program.  Singing along to one of the most entertaining pianists/hosts at the Bakers' Christmas open house. Christmas caroling to old neighbors with my siblings. Christmas songs on the radio driving around town.  Christmas music playing through our home daily.
  4. FAMILY.  Blake's parents came to visit us the week before Christmas.  It was so fun and natural to have them here.  We're glad we got to see them this holiday season even after they moved away.  And my brother Sam is coming  home from his mission on New Year's day so my other siblings came out to surprise him and came in time to spend Christmas with us.  It is so NICE just to be around each other.  We just get each other like no one else can.  My kids love having auntie & uncles around, too.  Anson met my brother Mark and brother-in-law Gentry for the first time.  While Anson is having fierce separation anxiety with others, he has completely embraced these guys, reinforced the bond with my sister, and even snuggles up to my brother's new girlfriend.  WE LOVE FAMILY!
  5. Perspective.  Christmas day we visited a large family who has literally lived in an RV for several years.  We went home more humble.  The morning after Christmas Blake got a call saying that one of our Church members died the night before.  The man was a father of several young children.  While we have so enjoyed this holiday for so many reasons, we gratefully recognize many, many everyday blessings in our lives and are not taking them for granted.

So proud of her Christmas cookies.
We dressed up for the Christmas party as angels using sheets and tablecloths.
Anson loved the Christmas music in the program at the party - especially directing the music from the back.
I brought the kids to my office to meet Santa.  He told Claire exactly which shelf in which room at the North Pole is was keeping her present for her.  Anson cried the whole time.
Holidays always make you sentimental for family.  We are SO LUCKY this year to have my side of the family HERE this year!
Christmas Eve magic while Blake & I watched "It's a Wonderful Life".
I felt Christmas this year.   Decorations, gifts, cookies and parties are just a accompaniment to what's really important.  This year I felt FAITH.  I felt FAMILY.  I felt PEACE.  I'm so thankful for this time of year that we get to focus on those things (if we don't let ourselves get caught up in the commercial distractions).  At least for me and my house, we get to talk about the birth of Jesus Christ, why we celebrate his birth so enthusiastically, why he came to earth, why he is our Savior, why we love Him.  I hope you each got to ask yourself "why?" this year and felt Christmas yourself, too.  It's wonderful.

Our Christmas Fun List!

Claire announced one day that Christmas was only a little bit fun but Easter is a lot of fun.  (She loves Easter egg hunts and has empty egg hunts almost daily with Gramma around Easter-time.)  But Christmas is HUGE!  So I told her we'd come up with a Christmas Fun list to do something every day for Christmas.  I tried to incorporate Sundays, Monday night FHEs, and other calendar items already.  So far we've made candy cane reindeer, she made a gingerbread house at preschool, we took some friends to the Creche Exhibit at the Palo Alto LDS church, and watched the First Presidency Christmas Devotional (access it through headline link at the lds.org home page).  The Creche and the Devotional were great ways to kick off the Christmas season for us!  It reminds us what the season is really about - Jesus Christ, and why we are so happy that he was born so many years ago.

Here is our list.

Claire was so excited she started copying the list by hand onto another sheet of Christmas paper.  After about 30 minutes and only 5 items later she abandoned it, but I thought it was an excellent self-created exercise in hand writing!

What does your family do to make Christmas fun and meaningful?  I'm gathering ideas for next year.  Next year I hope to get this into a real Advent Calendar.

In other news, Anson just told me "no" for the first time yesterday.  I fear I'm starting into a new phase with him...

Our Budding Artist

If you don't like to read bragging, stop here.

Claire wanted to draw a blue bird and asked me how.  I'm not an artist, so instead I pulled out my phone and let her look through images to copy.  I was so surprised when she came back with these!

Blake and I are not artists.  But her "Papa" (Keoki) is a graphic designer.  And she loves to watch my cousin Amanda draw comic book characters.  Nature and nurture right there.

I was telling this story to some friends at dinner last night and saying how close the drawings were to the originals.  Claire overheard and corrected me: "They were exactly the same, Mom."

Part I: Anson's Croup and Part II: Claire's Activity

Part I:  Anson's Croup

I had a big Young Women In Excellence parent night to decorate for on Wednesday so I was focused on that.  I had the kids with me at Church to decorate even though they had coughs and Blake came to the building to help with a musical number for the program.  Anson's breathing and coughing became worse and worse throughout the evening and I missed most of the program before sending Blake home with Anson.  When I finally got home I took him into a steamy bathroom to play, then into the cold night air and then put Anson to bed.  I read 3 reference books about how to help him.  All three books pointed to Croup and told me to call the doctor NOW.  (Meanwhile Blake had put himself to bed.  In many ways Blake is a perfect husband, but good luck waking that man up once his head hits the pillow...)  I called the advice nurse who told me to try steam again for 20 minutes and take him to ER if that didn't help.  Anson had woken up in the meantime, I took him into the steamy bathroom and he freaked out so much his crying made his croupy breathing worse and his lips started turning blue.   Forget steam, I took him to the ER at 11PM and was there until 3:15AM.  Not fun at all.  Even taking a temperature and the stethoscope were traumatic for the little guy, let alone the oxygenation monitor, breathing treatments and the other noises going on.  Not only was it stressful for him, but he also had little sleep that day which made him all the worse to soothe.  There was actually a point where he kept trying to get off the bed and run away.

Somewhere around 3AM in an attempt to distract him we were looking at pictures of family on my phone and I decided to take a picture of us.  When he saw our faces in the camera's phone he started saying "Hi Mama.  Hi Mama." and waving "I-love-you."  I love the picture not because that night was magic or because we look great, but because it's evidence of his sweet nature even when he's so sick and in such a confusing place.

That morning Anson & I both slept until noon (a BIG thanks to my Mom for coming to the house and watching Claire from when Blake had to leave in the morning for work so that I could sleep).  I woke up to a voice message from the Pediatrician's office asking to call them.  I called and ended up with the soonest appointment at 2:15PM.  I expected to just be checked out, talk about the night before and go home.  However, his breathing was still noisy and the term that I heard all the night before was still coming up: "Strider".  They kept us there for another couple treatments and monitoring until past 5:30PM.

Poor Claire was happy to join this time thinking she could tell everyone she was sick, too, and get a teddy bear like the ER nurses gave Anson the night before.  She was all happy & talkative at the doctor office until the treatments started.  Anson was crying and I was confining him to stay still.  I looked over to Claire on the other side of the room who was crouched into the table next to her hiding her head in her hands and crying saying she was scared!  I offered to hold her and hug her while I was holding Anson but she didn't want to come anywhere near us.  So sad!  It was tense.  I felt helpless.  Finally I was able to explain the mist was just like a cloud.  She had recently seen dry ice for Halloween and understood that "clouds" were safe so immediately perked up with relief that it was just a cloud Anson had to breath in.  Phew!  Before the second treatment the doctor told me if it wasn't effective they'd send us back to ER and possibly have to transfer us to the hospital in Santa Clara.  I called my dad & Blake and asked them to come give Anson a priesthood blessing.  They did.  Anson folded his hands for the blessing even though no one told him to and no one else was folding their arms.  (I'm amazed he recognized the reverence needed for the moment since he's so young.)  He freaked out when the nurse came in during the blessing, but after she left he took the final treatment calmly and actually fell asleep during it - which made for calm inhaling!  Such a difference from all the other treatments up until that point!  This final treatment was also the most effective he'd had of all of them.  His breathing quieted down afterward and even the doctor was impressed at the sudden improvement.  The doctor told us we could go home to monitor ourselves.  I'm so thankful for the blessing.  I really think if we had done that sooner we would have been home sooner.  It was still a rough few days at home but things today are finally back to normal.  (Thankfully!)

Part II:  Claire's FHE Activity

Tonight I was preparing a mini-lesson for Family Home Evening (FHE).  Claire sat up next to me at the desk and announced she was going to make the activity for FHE.  "I'm going to draw a picture and you will circle the differences," she said.   This is one of her favorite activities to do in her Friend magazine (online version here) so I was excited to see what she would come up with.

Here is her drawing.

After the lesson she reminded us she had the activity.  Sat in the chair in front of Blake and me, explained how the activity would work and then Blake & I took turns identifying things that were different on each side of the picture.  Eye color.  Nose shape.  Ball size.  Arm length....  Claire carefully said yes or no and circled the correct differences.

Not only am I excited that she volunteered to help, but that she was able to re-create something that she really loves to do and share that with us.  (She's getting pretty good at telling us what to do, too....  And THAT's only cute sometimes.)   ;)

She was very proud of her successful activity and so were we!

A little catch up via photos

I used to have one camera.  Now I have 3.  And don't download any of them regularly.  Photo documenting isn't working as well as it used to.  And even if I was consistent about the camera use or downloading, I have my hands more full with two kids and don't have another pair of hands for a camera.  That may be why my iPhone takes more photos lately.  And why I don't have as many pictures/videos of Anson just being cute.  Sorry, son, I'm trying!  In any case, here's a sad attempt at a catch up!
Labor Day at the beach with the Haws Family

On Grammy & Papa's last weekend in CA before officially moving completely we spent the day at the beach, of course!  We had a nice lunch in Carmel and played on a couple beaches on the way home.

Gramma (my mom) is the master fort-builder.  Notice the muli-level creation.  We're so lucky she can watch the kids every morning for us!

Fun stuff with my cousin Haley on her visit to CA (and her sister) for her birthday!  San Francisco, Ghiradelli, Natural Bridges State Beach, and a SJ Sharks game for Raimo's birthday.

And, of course, a pre-Halloween pumpkin patch!  Train ride, hay tunnel, corn stalk maze, farm animals, finding a perfect pumpkin (there were lots, actually), bumping into old neighbors, lots of fun!

Anson is a Walking Pro

This may be more of a personal journal entry than anything, just to document our little boy at this stage.

Anson has been walking for probably 6 months now, taking a step at a time.  For a long time he was walking everywhere but required a hand to do so.  I was definitely ready for him to just let go so I could walk with a straight back.

One night we had the Mukherjee's over and Anson was showing off his walking skills.  But instead of crashing into them he stopped in front and handed them something gently.  Turning point!

Not too long after that we were practicing walking between Blake and me and this is what we got:

The next day he was walking between Blake and I when we were in separate rooms in the house, just going back and forth.

The next day he was officially walking everywhere.  Yay!  He's been essentially walking for so long that he started with running, walking over things, carrying heavy objects, etc.  I really don't mind.  He was into everything already anyway and at least he's not pulling on me all the time.  I can walk freely now, too. :)

Some more "stats" on Anson at 16 months:
  • At our recent checkup our pediatrician told us he's at the 6th percentile for weight and the 90th percentile for height, which has been consistent for his lifetime so far.  He's a tall and lean kid.
  • He can say: Mama, Dada, Mama (a little differently for Gramma), Papa, ball, Co (for cup and milk), car, koki (hikoki is Japanese for airplane), bapo (Japanese for belly button), kaka (for cookie/cracker), hah (hot), nana (for banana and string cheese), buh-bow (bubble), uh-huh (for yes) and uh-uh (for no), buh-bye
  • He imitates inflection for "Here mama" (handing something over),   "I wan(t) Mama",
  • He can sign: dog, ball, more, food, milk, drink, juice, please, diaper, ice-cream, cheese, banana, peas, bread, cereal, car, airplane, train, hot, wash hands and go!
  • He also thinks it's funny to pinch his nose and say "Mama"
  • He LOVES (and chases) dogs, cats, and cars.
  • He also loves balls and has a pretty good arm.
  • He dances to music, claps after every song someone sings or plays, and sometimes conducts the music with both arms.
  • He clasps his hands together for prayers.
  • Every morning he gives kisses & hugs, blows kisses, waves good-bye, and signs "I Love You" with just his index finger extended.
  • His favorite people are Mom, Dad, Claire, Gramma and Amanda but also likes to talk to family on Skype.
 We love this kid!

Mel & Monterey

Melanie & Wyatt came for a quick trip to Monterey.  It was great to meet Wyatt and fun to hang out with them for the day.  Spending time with family is our favorite pastime.  Spending time at the beach is our other favorite pastime.  It was a happy day!

The afternoon, in pictures.
Amanda teaches our kids how to properly chase birds.
She's a good teacher.
We love Amanda!
A running hug for Melanie!

W & A

Stayed here nearly the whole time, watching and feeling the water go in and out.  Can't blame her.

W, A and M
Not pictured was lunch at a place we'll likely not visit again, a memory-filled walk to Big Granddaddy & Corrie's old house (owners let us walk into the back yard and, sadly, we forgot to get pictures!), and afterward hot cocoas to warm up after all the time on the beach.

To Mel & Wyatt: Thanks for the visit and sharing your whole day with us!
